Paging Holden Caulfield
Driving with Madison earlier today. Dilapidated white panel truck with all kinds of colorful scrawls and spray-painted streaks passes by. She notices.
"Dad, what are those signs called again? The writing that people do all over the place?"
"Graffiti?"
"Graffiti, that's right. Why do people do that?"
"Oh, I don't know..."
"There's some by the side of the mozzarella store, you know? On the wall of the plaza. What's that one sign you always see? What does it mean?"
"Sign?"
"Yeah, where they have graffiti you usually see that sign. It's like one big finger, and then knuckles."

How awful!
I wonder what you told her in reaction?

You have to love that innocence. It's a shame that other people put images out there that could take it away.
sooo..... what did you tell her?
I did my own version of Holden wiping the message off the wall, which basically amounted to saying that I didn't know and changing the topic of conversation. Seemed a better approach than full and accurate disclosure in this case.
Just came across this, and the last quote is so striking...and says a hell of a lot about the symbolism of, effectively, what is just one finger, "and then knuckles".
Look forward to reading the rest of your blog :).
hahahahaha! I miss being innocent =(
Aw. How old is your daughter?
